  1. The TOPEX/Poseidon Informational CD-ROM: Perspectives on an Ocean Planet (TM)

  3. 1. INTRODUCTION 
  4.  =============

  6. On August 10,1992, the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite was launched from the Guiana Space
  7. Center in Kourou, French Guiana. The spacecraft's mission was to provide a 3 to 5 year
  8. look at the changing topography of the world's oceans. The information generated by 
  9. the mission is used by scientists to help us better understand the ocean's role in the global
  10. climate.
  11.  
  12. The goal of this CD-ROM is to provide a comprehensive look at the TOPEX/Poseidon 
  13. mission and spacecraft. The CD contains over an hour of digital video, audio, images, and 
  14. text captions which describe everything from the impetus for the mission to the results 
  15. we've obtained thus far.

  17. The CD is divided into the following seven sections:

  20.     Section 2: Mission Description
  21.     Section 3: Spacecraft
  22.     Section 4: How the Measurement System Works
  23.     Section 5: Mission Operations
  24.     Section 6: What We’ve Learned

  28. 2. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  29. ===========================

  31. The software and data on the CD are formatted such that they can be accessed by 
  32. Macintosh, PC, and other systems. For each of these platforms, the following minimum
  33. requirements should be met:
  34.  
  35.    Macintosh
  36.       - System 7.1
  37.       - 68030 processor
  38.       - 5MB free RAM
  39.       - 256 color, 640x480 pixel monitor
  40.       - 2X CD-ROM drive
  41.       - QuickTime 2.1 (included on CD)
  42.  
  43.    PC
  44.       - Windows 3.1
  45.       - 80386 processor
  46.       - 8MB  RAM
  47.       - 256 color, 640x480 pixel monitor
  48.       - 2X CD-ROM drive
  49.       - Audio capability
  50.       - QuickTime for Windows (included on CD)

  52.    Other
  53.       - WWW browser
  54.       - 256 color, 640x480 pixel monitor

  59. 3. RUNNING THE SOFTWARE
  60. ====================

  62. No installation is required to run the software; the Macintosh and PC programs are stand-alone
  63. applications. In addition, an HTML-based version is provided for WWW
  64. browser-equipped systems. To run the software on these systems, do the following:
  65.  
  66.    A. Macintosh
  67.       - Double-click on the "pop.mac" icon on the CD
  68.       OR
  69.       - open "pop.htm" from the FILE menu in your WWW browser
  70.     
  71.     For best performance, start up with as few extensions possible. Also, make sure 
  72.     you are running QuickTime 2.1 or later. If you have an older version of QuickTime,
  73.     you can install version 2.1 from the CD. It's in the folder called "qt:mac:".
  74.      
  75.    B. PC
  76.       - Double-click on the "pop.exe" icon on the CD (with your File Manager)
  77.       OR
  78.       - open "pop.htm" from the FILE menu in your WWW browser
  79.      
  80.     If you don't have QuickTime for Windows on your system, you can install it
  81.     by running "\qt\pc\QTINSTAL.EXE".
